Symi dances, Κυριακή Δερέμπεη singing, novels and things
“Κυριακή Δερέμπεη was born in Thessaloniki. She is descended from the refugees from Pontos on her mother’s side (she is fifth generation) and from Eastern Thrace and Istanbul from the father’s side. She comes from a musical family of Greek traditional music and cantors. Her grandfather was a professor of Byzantine music (Hagia Sophia Thessaloniki) and cantor in Metropolis Lagada.
Her musical training started at the age of five years with piano lessons. Later, for three years, she learned the bouzouki and studied for two years at the school of Byzantine music, Metropolis Lagada. Since 2013, she has been studying Byzantine music in Thessaloniki and has also been taking voice lessons in the art of classical and folk music.
From early on she has felt the pulse and rhythm of traditional music as a way of expression for her, and considers how these two types of traditional and Byzantine church music are what characterize her performances.”
